Popcorn Ceiling Removal
Insulating popcorn ceilings can help prevent airflow from living spaces and the roof or attic above. It also increases the ceiling’s thermal efficiency. We have many options for rigid foam insulation.
Polyisocyanurate wooden panels will provide the best insulation value and R-value. It would help if we chose polyiso panels with no foil facing. Foil facing is an exterior vapor barrier and can lead to problems in certain circumstances.
We can choose thicknesses ranging from 1/2 inch to 2 inches of Polyiso insulation Board. The thickness of the board determines R-value.
A board 1/2 inch thick has an R-value of approximately 3. R-values for boards 2 inches wide and more extensive are about 13 and 13. Remember that thicker boards require more screws to attach grid channels, furring strips, and drywall to the ceiling.
How to Cover a Popcorn Ceiling with Drywall
Attaching a new layer of 1/4-, 3/8, or 1/2 inch thick drywall to ceiling joists above the popcorn texture is the method. The thinnest drywall, 1/4-inch, is the most light. However, they can be fragile and difficult to work with once attached to ceiling joists. The best choice is usually 3/8 or 1/2-inch thick drywall. It is more robust but heavier.
Find the Ceiling Joists and Mark them.
We will locate each ceiling joist using a stud locater. Mark the center of each joist from opposite sides of your room. The ceiling should be marked first. Next, mark the wall along with the ceiling. This ensures that the marks remain visible even after the insulation is installed.
Layout the panels
We will measure the room width parallel to the joist direction. We will then divide the measurement by 48 inches (the width for an insulation panel) to find how many panels there will be; if there is any excess, trim 6 inches off the first row of panels. We will have full-width or nearly full-width panels in the last row.
